How does continuous inkjet printing work?

Continuous inkjet printing is one of the most reliable and effective methods used in date coding, product marking and variable printing, and has been widely used across multiple industries for many years.

It works by expelling electrically charged ink droplets from a printhead nozzle and passing them through an electric field, with the inkjet being broken into drops inside the chamber via a pulse from the piezoelectric crystal. The ink droplets required for the print job are charged as they break off from the inkjet, with the printer recirculating the remainder.

These charged droplets then pass through an electrostatic field between deflector plates, with the correct position of the droplet on the substrate determined by its speed and charge. Up to 120,000 of these droplets are expelled each second, without making contact with the material itself.

The high-performance qualities of CIJ technology means it is frequently used in a wide range of product identification and tracing applications, including the printing of variable information - such as dates, times, specific text, batch codes, product names and logos - on individual products created by various industries.

What are the benefits of continuous inkjet technology?

CIJ printing technology has been demonstrated over many years of industry use to be highly versatile and efficient, with a number of key qualities that make this method ideal for delivering high-quality results for fast-moving production lines:

  • Capable of printing on almost any materials, regardless of porosity, size, shape and texture
  • Suitable for most speeds, orientations and printing angles
  • Solvent-based inks deliver rapid drying and quicker production flow
  • Good printing tolerance even when surfaces are not flat or still (eg. wobbling bottles)
  • No-contact printing up to 10mm or more away from the printhead
  • Relatively low capital costs
  • Range of inks available in various colours, including low evaporation and non-MEK low taint

As such, CIJ printers are ideally suited for the needs of modern manufacturing. They allow for the printing of clear marking and coding information, ensuring your products are able to conform to strict industry legislation; moreover, modern platforms are designed with the needs of users in mind, with accessible interfaces and simple operations.
